Bavarian Purity Law – the world’s oldest food law still in effect

Its origins date back to the year 1165, when the first penalty was introduced in Augsburg for the sale of “bad” beer.  Over 300 years later, in 1487, Duke Albrecht III passed a law which initially applied to the Munich area and which imposed standard beer prices.  In addition, each brewer had to take a so-called brewer’s oath, under which he was only allowed to use barley, hops and water for brewing beer and no other ingredients (yeast was not mentioned as its existence was not yet known at the time).  It was year 1516 that the Purity Law was enacted to the whole of Bavaria.

The Bavarian Purity Law will be 500 years old in 2016 and its principal is still to be found in Germany’s current beer legislation.

You simply have to look for the quality seal stating stating “brewed according to the Purity Law 1516” or in German “Getrue dem bayerischen Reinheitsgebot von 1516” and you are guaranteed pure beer drinking enjoyment.
